Before these were packaged and mailed out, I made a series of molds of the masked and unmasked heads (all versions). If anyone's interested in unpainted duplicates of these pieces (wires cast as part of the original), feel free to contact me for details. NECA did a great job with their 7.5"/8" scale masked version, yet this is the only true 6" scale unmasked Robocop head available.
For details on what this project entailed, I've included a description after the photo gallery.
Work In Progress and Reference Photos
This project involved:
-Creating a battle damaged Robocop with three interchangable heads (magnetic): two unmasked versions with unique head sculpts and one 'grimacing' battle damaged version. This was accomplished with various dremel bits, hobby knifes, an a barbecue lighter. Additional cabling and tech detail/resculpting with Aves Apoxie Sculpt was also used. -Creating articulated (neck) 'grimacing' Robocop heads, compatible with unmodified FIGMA Robocop figures, of which the collector had multiples.
-Creating 2-piece articulated 'grimacing' fact sculpt masked Robocop heads that were compatable with unmodified FIGMA Robocop figures. The neck articulation was preserved by installing a Revoltech click-joint inside each head between the head and neck pieces (vertical rotation). Horizontal/ball joint rotation was preserved through the bottom neck joint.
-Creating solid piece 'A' and 'B' versions of Peter Weller's unmasked Robocop head (one more realistic, the other more stylized to match the 'anime' proportions of the FIGMA sculpt). Each unmasked head was augmented with with thin metal wiring anchored inside each piece, and running across the head to match reference stills from the original Robocop film. This was accomplished using stripped paperclips, wire bending tools/cutters, and many hours of patience. Each unmasked head was compatible with an unmodified FIGMA Robocop figure - but required trimming of the black 'collar' of each figure to ensure screen accuracy when attached.
The collector these went to also was nice enough to email me photos of the additional A/B/Masked-Grimace commissioned heads in use on his extra FIGMA Robocop figures:
-The basis for the unmasked Robocop heads were taken from a larger hollow Resin model kit. Using Smooth-on products "Oomoo 25", a tin-cure silicon mold making material, I cast the original sized head/neck assembly. From that 1st generation mold, I added Hydroshrink+water, and created a 1/2 sized version. This processed was repeated to create a 2nd generation mold, the product of which was again reduced by roughly 40-50% in size. From the picture (inset left), you can see the number of mold generations I went through to arrive at the final pieces. Even after the downscaled versions were properly cast, so much of the detail was eliminated by the downscaling process, I resculpted all 6 unmasked heads individually in Aves Apoxie sculpt.
-A custom 'war zone' backdrop, resculpted and repainted. MIG powers (usually only used by scale modelers) were employed with a fixative and sealer to ensure realistic blast patterns - both on the diorama, and on Robocop himself.
-As a bonus for the German Robocop collector, I customized a Playmobil Powerdrill that fit in the FIGMA figure's hand, referencing the 'unmasking' scene in the 1st Robocop film where a drill is used to remove his helmet.
-Additional bonus pieces (oil drums, etc.) were added to aid with diorama creation, or increase display options among his multiple Robocop figures.
